This is your chance to explore and engage with one of South India’s richest cultural treasures. The Carnatic musical tradition is distinguished from the Hindustani music of northern India by its historical resistance to the Persian and Arab influences that heavily mark the latter. It is a genre that foregrounds the vocalist; even instrumental performances are generally composed to echo vocal music. Avid listeners celebrate its elegant restraint and intellectual tenor. Although it does share the core principles of raga (melody) and tala (rhythm) with its Northern counterpart, Carnatic music has a far more orderly and structured system. Improvisation is emphasised, although the tradition boasts its own canon of devotional compositions such as the kriti of the 16th century. You can be a part of a rich history, with just the click of a button!
This course will equip you with a firm grasp of the fundamentals required to develop your singing voice. Beginners and instrumentalists looking to learn singing are also welcome. You will be able to use this training to pursue more advanced study in Hindustani Classical and Carnatic vocal styles.
